    The Technocratic Transition

Following the "Gen Z" anti-corruption protests in September 2025, Nepal has entered a rare period of technocratic rule. The appointment of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as Interim Prime Minister marks the first time a woman has held the executive office, tasked specifically with overseeing the March 2026 elections.

    Judicial Activism

The Supreme Court remains the sole functioning check on power. A landmark verdict in June 2025 mandated the implementation of ILO 169 (Indigenous Rights), enforcing "Free, Prior, and Informed Consent" for development projects.

"Impact: Major infrastructure projects now require local FPIC."

    Transitional Justice

After a decade of delay, the TRC Fund Regulations were finally published in the Gazette (Nov 21, 2025), operationalizing financial reparations for conflict victims. The 4-year mandate for the commissions is now ticking.

    WATCHDOG ALERT

    Social Media Regulation Bill (2025)

Status: Tabled but Stalled. Introduced in early 2025, this bill criminalizes online anonymity and mandates platform registration. While the parliament's dissolution has paused its passage, Watchdog analysis indicates the Interim Government may attempt to enforce elements of it via Directives to curb "disinformation" during the election cycle.

LDC Graduation 2026: The Economic Cliff

Nepal is scheduled to graduate from "Least Developed Country" status in Nov 2026. The 16th Periodic Plan outlines the strategy, but the loss of preferential trade access (EBA/GSP) poses a constitutional obligation for the state to restructure the industrial base immediately to prevent an export shock.
