Constitution Watchdog Statement: Unconscionable Attack on Judicial Family is a Global Assault on the Rule of Law
The Constitution Watchdog is utterly appalled and unequivocally condemns the heinous act of unconscionable violence committed against the family of Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahman, Judge of the Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court. This barbaric incident, resulting in the tragic murder of his young son and the grievous injury to his wife, is more than a localized crime; it represents a profound and destabilizing assault on the foundational principles of democracy and constitutional justice in Bangladesh. We extend our deepest condolences to the Judge and his family during this period of unspeakable grief.
We view this act of targeted intimidation as a direct attempt to paralyze the independence of the judiciary. Judicial independence is the non-negotiable cornerstone of the rule of law, and its strength is measured by the ability of its officers to administer justice without fear of reprisal. When the personal safety and domestic sanctuary of a judicial officer and their loved ones are violated, it creates a climate of terror that fundamentally compromises the judge’s capacity to render impartial and fearless verdicts. The State’s failure to secure the lives of those dedicated to justice sends a chilling message globally, eroding confidence in Bangladesh’s commitment to its own constitutional mandates.
Constitution Watchdog demands an immediate, high-level, and completely impartial investigation into this matter. The investigation must not only identify the direct perpetrators but must also uncover any organized network or vested interests that may have instigated, sponsored, or benefited from this atrocity. We call upon the Government of Bangladesh to immediately implement a comprehensive and fortified security framework for all judicial officials and their families. Accountability in this case is mandatory, and the perpetrators must face the full and uncompromising force of the law to demonstrate the State’s resolve in protecting constitutional integrity.
The Constitution Watchdog will continue to monitor the progress of this investigation closely. The security of the judiciary is paramount to democracy everywhere, and we urge the international community, along with domestic civil society organizations, to stand in solidarity with the judges of Bangladesh. The State must act now to reaffirm its sacred duty to protect those who uphold the Constitution and ensure that justice, unfettered by violence or intimidation, prevails.
